UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS BOAT CLUB
Our Squads:
SENIOR RACING SQUAD
The senior racing squad is comprised of students who have rowed for at least a year. Whether you rowed through school, or have completed your beginner year either here or with another club, senior racing is the place for you!
Each year we send a variety of senior crews to some of the biggest races in the UK and Europe, including Henley Women's Regatta, HoRR and WeHoRR, as well as BUCS Head and Regatta, on top of other races throughout the year.
BEGINNER RACING SQUAD
Beginner racing welcomes anyone who fancies rowing..and is (a little) competitive. From starting as complete novices in October, our Beginners this year went on to race competitively at BUCS Head, BUCS Regatta and had boats entered for HoRR and WeHORR. As well as water training sessions, our squds have access to weekly strength and conditioning sessions with an S+C coach, land sessions run by our club coaching scholars and whole-club circuit classes, which prove to be just as social as they are sweaty!
Despite the integration between squads at socials, circuits and coached sessions, beginners and seniors mainly train separately to allow for the growth of beginners in a pressurised environment. So, there's no need to worry about being the only newbie at training, because everyone will be.
RECREATIONAL SQUAD
Fancy learning to row, but without the additional commitment of racing? Recreational is for you! The inclusivity of our club allows beginners, as well as previous rowers to access the same facilities and coaching of the club to develop skills and technique in a relaxed and encouraging environment, and of course participate in club socials. Water sessions are often separate, however the option to attend land sessions and circuits with the racing squads is offered.
Switching between squads is also available, so don't panic if you're not sure if racing or rec is more suited to you.
COXING SQUAD
Our Coxing Squad welcomes seniors and beginners each year to try their hand in the coxes seat. Coxing can be a great way to develop your understanding of rowing as well as developing technique.
You will receive coaching to develop your skills techniques, and will have the opportunity to cox training sessions across all squads, as well as at regional and perhaps even national races, such as BUCS, HoRR, WeHORR and Henley.
COACHING
FULL-TIME COACH
In January 2015 we saw the arrival of Dan Grant, taking on the new role of Head of Rowing. Dan leads the coaching for the club full time across all the squads and is supported by the clubs many volunteer coaches. There are three students in the club that are coaching scholars who receive funding towards coaching qualifications, and are on a mentored pathway programme.
DEDICATED SENIOR AND BEGINNER COACHES
Come 2024, Sean Potter joined us as a dedicated senior coach, and has allowed a focussed integration in to coaching structured between squads.
